Types of HSS Twist Drill Bits

1.Long twist drill bits

Long twist drill bits are designed for drilling holes which run deeper than a standard-length drill bit. A typical example might include installing security latches on a door, which would require drilling down through the ends of the workpiece to a depth of up to one foot.
An especially long twist drill bit will be required to complete everyday tasks such as these, but the main potential disadvantage of an extra-long drill bit is that it can tend to wander more as it goes. Longer twist bits are also more prone to breaking at lower gauges than short bits, particularly when more force is applied to get through greater depths of material. Twist drill bits are also available in a short form.

2.Reverse twist drill bits

Reverse twist drill bits are designed to work with your drill set to the reverse rotation direction (counter-clockwise). However, unlike a standard drill bit which would simply drag its cutting edge backwards around the interior of the hole with the drill running backwards, reverse twist drill bits are machined with their fluted cutting surfaces facing in the opposite direction.
When a reverse bit is inserted into a chuck and the drill is run counter-clockwise, this means that the bit performs the same sort of cutting action that a standard drill bit does when moving clockwise. This can be extremely useful as a method of screw extraction when the slots on a screw head have been worn away.

3.High speed twist drill bits

The vast majority of twist drill bits are made from high grade steel, of which two particular formulations are especially common for specific scenarios:
High-speed steel (HSS):
High-speed twist bits are effectively a universal type of drill bit, and most types of HSS twist bits will be suitable for general drilling work
HSS twist bits are a requirement for drilling through various sorts of metallic workpieces and surfaces, as they are formulated to withstand the higher temperatures generated through the increased friction involved in drilling metal without losing hardness (temper)
Carbon steel:
Conversely, if you are only going to be drilling through wood, you can instead opt for a carbon steel twist drill bit.
Carbon steel twist bits tend to be less flexible and more prone to breaking under higher torque forces and temperatures than HSS versions, but drilling most types of wood and composite lumber materials is unlikely to cause this issue.
Although more brittle and less robust than HSS bits, especially under higher working temperatures, carbon steel twist drill bits can prove a more cost-effective option for exclusively wood-based drilling applications.

4.Twist drill bits for metals

If you need to drill into metal, you can't typically expect to use a regular steel or carbon steel drill bit designed for cutting through wood. This is especially apparent when dealing with particularly hard materials and surfaces, such as steel. However, there is a good range of treated, coated and tipped twist drill bits for metal, all of which are manufactured to offer a more robust cutting tool for tackling those tougher metalworking jobs.
The most widely available include titanium twist drill bits and cobalt drill bits. Like regular high-speed steel (HSS) drill bits, these are expressly built for the purposes of drilling through metals. The key difference between titanium and cobalt drill bits is that the titanium versions are toughened with a titanium oxide (or titanium nitride, also known as TiN drill bits) coating, while cobalt steel twist drill bits are crafted entirely from solid cobalt steel.

Process of HSS Twist Drill Bits

Milling method
Milling the required shape of the spiral groove with a forming cutter on the unhardened twist drill blank. The milling method has a large twist drill manufacturing processing range, mainly processing 2.5 to 70 mm twist drill.
The disadvantage of the milling method is the high cost of the tool, long twist drill manufacturing processing time, and finish the final shape before heat treatment processing. During heat treatment, there will happen geometry errors, almost all of which are reflected in the finished drill bit.

Rolling
The drill is rolled on a heated blank with four fan-shaped plates to form the shape of the drill bit.
Compared with the milling method, using plastic deformation of the drill bit manufacturer with less accuracy, in addition, due to the heat treatment, the geometry of the rolling twist drill will change, making it impossible to meet the requirements of drilling high-quality holes.
The main advantage of this method is to save the raw materials for the manufacture of a twist drill, with a good economy.

Grinding
The newest type of twist drill manufacturing processing.
When the wheel speed reaches 100m/s, makes the spiral groove of the twist drill to be ground out of the whole material, high-speed grinding can reduce the cutting force, greatly improve the surface quality and reduce the shape error. Compared with the milling method, the grinding method can greatly reduce the working time of a single piece, high quality, and stability.
At present, the grinding twist drill manufacturing method can only manufacture the diameter of 15 or smaller twist drills.

Components of HSS Twist Drill Bits

Pointed tip (drill point)
At the forefront of the twist drill bit is the pointed tip, often referred to as the drill point or chisel edge. This pointed tip initiates the cutting process by creating a small indentation in the material’s surface. The shape and angle of the drill point vary based on the type of material being drilled. For example, metal drill points tend to have a steeper angle than those used for wood to ensure effective cutting.

Flutes and helix angle
The body of the twist drill bit features helical flutes, which are spiral-shaped grooves that run along the length of the bit.

Cutting edges
The intersection between the flutes and the bit’s body forms the cutting edges. These edges slice through the material as the bit rotates, removing material to create the hole. The angle at which the flutes spiral along the bit’s length is called the helix angle. This angle determines the efficiency of chip evacuation and affects the stability of the drilling process.

Web (core)
The central part of the twist drill bit that runs between the flutes is known as the web or core. The web provides structural support to the cutting edges and helps maintain the bit’s stability during drilling. The thickness of the web varies, and its design impacts factors like the bit’s strength, rigidity, and ability to cut efficiently.

Shank
The shank is the non-cutting end of the twist drill bit that is inserted into the drill chuck. The shank can have various shapes, such as cylindrical or hexagonal, depending on the type of drill and chuck it’s designed to fit.

Materials and coatings
The choice of materials used to manufacture twist drill bits directly affects their performance. Different materials offer varying levels of hardness, heat resistance, and durability. Additionally, coatings like titanium nitride (TiN) or black oxide can be applied to the bit’s surface to enhance wear resistance and reduce friction.

How to Maintain HSS Twist Drill Bits

When drilling steel parts, please ensure sufficient cooling and use metal cutting fluid.

Good drill pipe rigidity and guide rail clearance can improve the accuracy of drilling and the life of the drill bit.

Please ensure that the magnetic base and the workpiece are level and clean.

When drilling thin plates, reinforce the workpiece, and when drilling large workpieces, please ensure the stability of the workpiece.

At the beginning and end of drilling, the feed rate should be reduced by 1/3.

When drilling and cutting, there are a lot of fine powder materials, such as cast iron, cast copper, etc., you can use compressed air to help chip removal without using coolant.

Please remove the iron filings wound on the drill body in time to ensure smooth chip removal.
