What Is Electroplating Process?

Leave a message

Electroplating: The process of attaching a layer of metal film to the surface of the part by electrolysis, so as to prevent metal oxidation, improve wear resistance, conductivity, reflectivity, corrosion resistance and improve aesthetics. The outer layer of many coins is also electroplating.

Typical products: surface treatment of transportation, consumer electronics, furniture, jewellery and silverware, etc.

Suitable for output: single to large quantities

Quality: extremely high gloss, anti-oxidation and corrosion

Speed: medium speed, depending on the material type and coating thickness

Applicable materials

1. Most metals can be electroplated, but different metals have different levels of purity and plating efficiency. Among them, the most common ones are: tin, chromium, nickel, silver, gold and rhodium (rhodium: a kind of platinum, which is extremely expensive and can maintain high brightness for a long time, and can resist most chemicals and acids. It is most commonly used for products that require extremely high surface gloss of products, such as trophies and medals).

2. The most commonly used plastic for electroplating is ABS, because ABS can withstand the high temperature of 60°C (140°F) of electroplating, and its electroplating layer and non-electroplated layer have high bonding strength.

3. Nickel metal cannot be used for electroplating products that come into contact with the skin, because nickel is irritating and toxic to the skin.

Process cost

1. There is no mould cost, but the fixture is needed to fix the parts.

2. The cost of time depends on the temperature and the type of metal.

3. The labour cost (medium-high), depending on the specific type of electroplating parts, such as the electroplating of silverware and jewellery, requires extremely high skilled workers to operate, because it has high requirements for appearance and durability.

Environmental impact

A large number of toxic substances will be used in the electroplating process, so professional diversion and extraction are needed to ensure the minimum environmental impact.
